Good.

You are good, and what you do is good. Psalm 119:68

I tend not to find it too difficult to believe God is good. When I think back on everything He has done for me, it seems very obvious that God is good. He went through suffering and humiliation that he did not deserve just so that I could be close to Him. However, I struggle to see sometimes that what He is doing is good. I know what he did was good, but when life makes no sense, can we say what he is currently doing is good?

I’ve come to a point in my life where I just don’t understand what He is doing or what He wants me to do. Things I would consider obvious answers are not the answers at all, but the Bible says what He does is good. So, what does good mean? The first definition is “to be desired or approved of,” and the second is “having the qualities required for a particular role.” His actions don’t have to make sense to be good. The work He is doing is approved of. It has been carefully considered and masterfully planned to work exactly how He intends. His work is good because He is good. What He does is good. To us, it may look like the most horrifying and confusing situation, but what He does is good. Our point of view on a situation does not dictate how much God is working in that situation. Just because it doesn’t seem right to you, doesn’t mean it wasn’t what God planned.

Good also does not mean easy. Just because it is what God planned does not mean it is going to make it a walk in the park. Jesus walked out God’s plan perfectly. Was His life easy? He suffered emotionally and physically just like we do. He is not oblivious to your pain or heartache. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18. Jesus even got to the point where He asked God if there was any other way for his plan to happen, let it be done that way. He did not live an easy life, but He wanted God’s will to be done more than He wanted comfort.

So, just because your world seems dark doesn’t mean God has left your side; it could just mean your eyes are closed. If you ask him, he’ll open them for you. Things still might not make any sense, but you’ll be able to see that the one who is good, who is doing good things, has never left your side.
