"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden ... Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven." Matthew 5:14,16
I was driving home tonight, and God began to show me a few things. I looked at the moon. The moon is a light in the midst of darkness for the world. It lights up the whole earth, and expels the darkness around it. The moon's light, however, is not its own. It is a reflection of the Sun's light. Without the Sun, the moon would appear just as dark as the earth. The moon can't be a light for the world without the Sun's help.
In the same way, we (as Christians) cannot be a light for the world without the Son's help. We have to rely on Jesus to provide the light that we can reflect. It is not in our own power or abilities. Because "the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world" (1 John 4:4), we are able to walk in the things that the world cannot understand (ex- Grace, Love, Mercy, Peace, Patience, etc).
The moon lights up everything around it during a full moon, but there are times when the world can't even seen the moon or can only see a part of it. This is because the earth has come between the Sun and the moon. The earth has blocked out the light the moon was once reflecting. Now, the people on earth cannot see the Sun or the Sun's vessel for reflection.
I believe we also allow the world to come between us and the Son. We allow the business of our day to day lives or the things that the world has to offer come between us and God. This causes us not to reflect, or not to reflect as strongly, the light of the Lord. You may be the only Bible someone ever reads. So by not reflecting as the light you've been called to be, you may miss your chance to show someone the Son.
There's a song called "No Wonder" by River Valley Worship. In it there is a line that says "See the light tearing through the darkness." Light is powerful. It tears through darkness. The darkness cannot stop it. You are the light of the world. Walk in that power, and live fearlessly because of the one you're reflecting.
